Southern Medical University (SMU, 南方医科大学) was founded in 1951 in Harbin as the Northeast Military Region Health School and designated in 1979 as the First Military Medical University (第一军医大学) under the Central Military Commission. In 2004, it was transferred to Guangdong Province and renamed Southern Medical University, standing today as one of China's top independent medical universities.
Covering over 2,600 mu across Guangzhou and Shunde (Foshan) campuses, SMU encompasses 15 directly affiliated tertiary Grade-A hospitals with over 20,000 total beds (including Nanfang Hospital and Zhujiang Hospital). 12 disciplines rank in the global top 1% of ESI, with Clinical Medicine and Pharmacology & Toxicology in the global top 1‰.
