Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU, 西北工业大学) is a world-class national "Project 985", "Project 211", and "Double First-Class" (Class A) university directly under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). Born in 1938 as the National Northwestern Engineering Institute (formed by Beiyang, Jiaotong, and Tsinghua engineering units) and merging the East China Aviation Institute in 1956 and the PLA Military Institute of Engineering's Naval Department in 1970, NPU is China's only institution dedicated to simultaneous leadership in Aeronautics, Astronautics, and Marine Engineering (三航).
