Tracing its heritage to Sanjiang Normal School founded in 1902 and later the Central University, its modern identity solidified in 1958 when the Department of Food Engineering of Nanjing Institute of Technology relocated to Wuxi to form Wuxi Institute of Light Industry, before unifying into Jiangnan University in 2001.
